I made a bench..yes that is the photo of the bench I made…I really wish it was Fabulous or I could tell you an amazing story of when I went into the woods with my great grandfather and cut down a tree and shaved the wood…but I didn’t… so like I said before it’s a bench and I made it.
I never actually wrote down all the steps when I was making this bench, because I was so worried about it turning out bad, I never got around to it…but I can tell you what I did and it is pretty basic.
I did go to my friends of Pinterest…you know the strangers that have Pins for everything and I’m not talking about the habitual pinners I’m talking about the actual doers…they really DO THE PROJECTS!!??
This project required materials that I had to go buy so I went and bought them….this was fairly easy. Now deciding on a neutral printed fabric that was simple and durable was my only real challenge, because the ordeal in the fabric store which always has 30 customers and 2 employees. Not to mention the upholstery fabric section is pretty scary.
All those jumbo rolls of fabric can be very intimidating…almost like lifting weights in the gym because you have to carry that huge roll to the cutting counter and have them cut your dimensions but you don’t wanna look like a rookie and drop it so you try to balance and stay strong as you walk to the counter and take a ticket..you realize you are #29 and they just called #2…
Tip: Measure your bench dimensions and know how much fabric you need to buy so you don’t buy too much or too little…trust me on this…I bought too much and had so much extra fabric I was covering throw pillows for DAYS.
Materials Needed:
- Bench base-plywood…but I had an old cabinet door from Ikea so I used it
- Batting and cushion..all purchased at the Fabric store
- Spray adhesive so the cushion and batting stick on the bench
- legs…these are sold in Lowes…there is a whole leg section in Lowes
- Metal table leg straight top plates..one for each leg
- Spray paint..your choice or you can hand paint, or stain the legs
- Staple gun with heavy duty staples
I laid everything out and made sure the batting and cushion was soft enough and once it was to my liking, I used the spray adhesive to stick it on my base.
I covered the batting and cushions with my material and pulled it tight and stapled it underneath the bench, so nobody sits on staples….
Once it was assembled I put the metal table leg plates on the bottom where the legs were to be placed. I used 6 because I had 6 legs.
This bench is a multipurpose piece of furniture….Because I’m classy I like to use it to store laundry that I don’t feel like folding at the foot of my bed. I’ve also used it in my office so when I have a million pieces of paper I can lay them on the bench and organize them….Oh and my family does use the bench for sitting..like I said it’s a multipurpose piece of furniture.
I browsed through about 20 different pins on Pinterest and meshed a bunch of ideas together to make mine. It was fairly simple once I had all the materials and knew the measurements I wanted.
I think I searched DIY Cushioned Bench and found tons of really helpful tips and photos.
I’d love to see photos if anyone does attempt making a cushioned bench!
