Lego Party

I love throwing my kids birthday parties period. I try and not go overboard, but I’m all about the wow factor and I have a head full of crazy ideas.

I do try and keep costs low as possible by finding stuff I can make myself , or downloading stuff online like free images, games, and pictures. I’ve found fonts like the Lego font to match the theme of the party. It was fairly simple and I was able to customize my letters and all the décor for the party. This wasn’t the exact match, but it was pretty darn close.

My son wanted a Lego party… at a park…and of course with his entire kindergarten class. I should have said no, but I made it clear to the parents, this is not a drop off party, you must stay and watch your kid…at age 6 kids are wild and crazy and we were at a park so I was not taking chances of a kid escaping or vanishing on my watch…it ain’t happening.

Back to the décor, I spray painted a ton of boxes (free boxes we had) the primary colors and those served the purpose of adding color to the décor…all different size some used to hold extra decorations, gifts, whatever.

I found a cool recipe on how to make jello flavored popcorn and just added some drops of food coloring to adjust the color to match all the décor.

Jello Flavored Popcorn recipe

I served popcorn in glass bowls and I served some in popcorn cones aka scrap book paper lined with wax paper on the inside. My kids actually put the cones together with tape it was simple enough.

I purchased bags of primary color candy melts from the craft store and melted them by individual colors and dipped….ready for this…OREOS in each color…no those are not macaroons on the table those are Oreos, I think we dipped 2-3 packs.

My favorite addition to the party was edible Legos and again using candy melts, I found Lego shaped molds on Amazon and it was pretty simple…melt..pour let cool and bam! You now have edible Legos!

The kids didn’t realize they were candy because they looked pretty darn real. They were great to take home and I supplied clear bags as I do for every event, so people can take home favors, snacks, treats or whatever. I hate having this stuff go to waste or risking my kids eating 24 Oreos before bed.

It’s not always ideal to throw a party and things do take time, but I’m all about planning ahead…sometimes way ahead, but it gives me time to collect things when I see them or in my case make stuff or a few trial and error batches of burnt popcorn.

Few things I’ve learned along the way..some of them I’m still trying to navigate through the learning curve:

  • Pick a theme and stick with it
  • Pick a budget and stay as close to it as possible
  • Plan ahead
  • Set a time for starting and ending the party
  • Send invites early
  • Ask people to RSVP…why have 2 pizzas for 50 kids??
  • Cover the basics Food, Drinks, Treats…have enough to go around
  • Add color to your décor…balloons, banners, signs, boxes, and whatever else you can find
  • Have enough space and tables and chairs for people (borrow or rent chairs people will thank you when they don’t have to stand up for 2-3 hours)
  • Don’t invite the world..keep it about your close family, and your child’s friends
  • Unless you are a great baker order a cake from the grocery store or cupcakes
  • Try and make stuff at home and make your kids pitch in and help

Parties should be fun especially for kids! If you have any party tips for me, please let me know I’m always open to new ideas!
