Growing up I always looked forward to the County Fairs and trips to amusement parks. I did enjoy the rides and games, but the foods were what I really looked forward to.
A few of my faves….
- Popcorn
- Corn dogs
- Funnel cakes
- Candy apples
- Corn on the cob topped with anything from cheese to chili powder and lime..OMG!!
- Fried anything…from oreos to cookie dough…if it was fried l wanted to try it!!!!
As I got older, I shared these experiences with my kids..they aren’t as excited about the foods as much as the rides….but they love fried oreos!!! Paying $10 for 3 oreos is pretty pricey. I do splurge and let them pick a treat when we go, but I did a little research and sorta came up with my own version of a few of our favorite fun treats.
Deep Fried Oreos….plain and simple…dip them in batter and deep fry them!
My daughter found this recipe online and we all loved it! Deep Fried Oreo Recipe
I found the original corn dog recipe on Lillunas blog, I just made a few modifications to my own liking, and these corn dogs were incredible!!!!
Corn Dog Recipe (My way)
- ¾ cup of yellow cornmeal
- ¾ cup all-purpose flour
- 2 tbsp white granulated sugar
- ¼ tsp salt
- 1½ tsp baking powder
- 1 egg, lightly beaten
- 3 tbsp honey
- ¾ cup buttermilk+ 3 tablespoons because your batter will be too thick
- 2 tsp. vegetable oil
- 12 hot dogs cut and half (turkey dogs taste great too!)
- 24 candy sticks (like the ones you use for cakepops…get the long ones )
- 2 quarts vegetable oil, for frying
Directions:
- In a large pot heat the 2 quarts of oil to 350 degrees.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the cornmeal, flour, sugar, salt and baking powder. Add the egg, honey, buttermilk and vegetable oil, stir until combined. Let sit for 10 minutes.
- Meanwhile, cut the hot dogs and half and pat dry and insert a skewer into each hot dog. Pour the batter into a cup or glass tall enough to dip one dog at a time into the batter, then place into the hot oil to fry (I like to make sure that the batter is coating a bit of the stick so that the coating stays on)
- I try and lean my stick against teh side of the pot, so I dont have to fish out the stick….I’m affraid of hot oil…. If they start getting too dark, just turn down your oil and wait a few minutes and start over.
- I watch them carefully and make sure they are browning evenly on all sides. Cook for about 2-3 minutes.
- Remove from the oil and place on a paper towel lined cookie sheet or plate. Repeat with remaining hot dogs (you may have to tilt the cup a bit to get the last few ones fully dipped.
**Refrigerate any leftovers they heat up great in a airfryer, microwave or the oven for a few minutes**
