A friend of mine was getting ready to dump his sisters old leather ottoman. It wasn’t being used and it was taking up space. I offered to take it off their hands free of charge!!
I instantly had big plans for this brown leather ottoman. I knew my friends on Pinterest would help me with the ottoman makeover. I knew whatever l decided to do, it better have been easy, and did not require sewing. I’m pretty savvy with a hot glue gun and pretty quick with a staple gun!
I sorta measured the ottoman and quickly headed over to the fabric store…here’s where things got tricky.
Fabric stores sell regular fabric and they have jumbo fabric for upholstery and drapes and stuff like that. I knew I wanted a light color with minimal print, but something fun, but not too fun….after browsing through the selection I settled on my cream and black jumbo fabric.
I carried this 5 foot roll of fabric to the counter, pulled a number and bam! I told the lady to cut it to my accurate “eyeballed” measurement and skipped outta there.
Psssh, who conquers fabric in under 30 minutes??!! I’m almost home and still thinking I’m top notch….l just got a free piece of furniture, picked out fabric, and of course I used a coupon so the fabric was 40% off. I’m about to finish this sucker all in one day! I’m literally singing Cube’s “Today was a good day”……
Time to start the project:
- Ottoman
- Fabric
- Hot glue gun
- Staple gun
- Moscato..just in case I finish early I can lounge on my new ottoman
Apparently you have to take apart the ottoman and detach it from the base so you can get the fabric covered completely and stapled down.
That minute I took apart the ottoman and seen that I might have used some “Keya math” on the measurements I was coming up short. Like by another yard short. I’m officially pissed off at myself, I’m getting anxious about how many people are in line at the fabric counter. It’s always when you need to go back the lines are long and you kick yourself for not doing it right the first time.
I went from singing Cube lyrics to those angry DMX lyrics.
*** If you attempt this at home, please take apart the ottoman and measure the ENTIRE OTTOMAN..including the sides and make sure you have extra to pull it tight and staple it down****
With the correct measurements written down, I went back to the store, got the correct fabric measurements and covered the ottoman, reattached the base..although after I reattached the base, I realized I could have spray painted the base to match the black furniture in my room , but I said NOPE NOT TODAY. It’s gonna just stay this color…forever.

If anyone has any DIY tips or ways to make my life easier let me know!

OMG! LOVE this!
